History of the Club
Our History
Volunteers have been the backbone of Loch Sport Boat Club since it was formed by a group of holidaymakers in January 1965.
From the beginning, members dreamed of having clubrooms of their own. Successive committees worked tirelessly to raise funds and overcome the many challenges involved in finding a suitable place to build. It would take 27 years for that dream to begin taking shape.
In the club’s early years, water skiing was especially popular, including long-distance races to Paynesville. Sailing dinghies were later introduced, followed by trailer sailors during the 1980s. Throughout its history, the club has remained committed to encouraging family-friendly activities both on and off the water.
Before finding a permanent home, club activities were held at various locations along the foreshore. Members gathered at the old marina, the old hall, beneath the trees near the little jetty and, later, behind the amenities block at the deep-water jetty.
A lease for the club’s present site was granted in October 1992, although rezoning meant it was not formally signed until September 1999. Clearing of the site began in 1997, and an ATCO building served as a temporary clubhouse while plans for the permanent facility progressed.
In early 2000, plans for the Loch Sport Safety & Water Sports Centre were revised after several organisations that had intended to share the facility either went into recess or relocated.
Determined to bring the project to life, Boat Club members chose to construct a smaller building using the funds available. Work began in November 2000, with more than 64 volunteers contributing many hours to complete the building within budget. Building materials, furniture and electrical goods were generously supplied at discounted rates or donated by supporters.
The Loch Sport Safety & Water Sports Centre was officially opened in September 2001—a lasting achievement made possible by the commitment, generosity and community spirit of the club’s volunteers.
The club secured its future at this special waterfront location by renewing the site lease for a further 21 years from July 2020.
